Planning dental implants around a short visit

Implant treatment has a three to four month gap built into it. Here is how that gap is planned around two trips rather than one long stay.

The gap that has to be planned

Implant treatment is not one appointment. It is two stages with a wait in between, and the wait is not administrative. It is biological.

The implant is placed into the jawbone. Over the next three to four months the bone grows onto it and locks it in place, which is what makes it able to carry a crown and a lifetime of chewing. That process cannot be hurried, and a crown fitted before it is complete puts load on an implant that is not yet held.

So the question is never how to avoid the gap. It is how to arrange two visits around it.

The usual shape: two trips

First trip, the surgical part. Examination, the plan, and the implant placed. For a single implant the procedure takes about fifteen minutes under local anaesthetic. Depending on the situation you leave with a temporary restoration, so there is no visible gap while the implant heals.

The months between. You are at home, living normally. Nothing is required of you beyond ordinary hygiene and getting in touch if something does not feel right.

Second trip, the crown. The impression is taken, the work is measured digitally, and the final crown is fitted. This part is shorter than the first.

Many patients plan this deliberately around two summers, or around a summer and a winter visit. It is the ordinary way the treatment is done from abroad, not a compromise.

Send the X-ray first

The single thing that saves the most time is a recent X-ray, sent before you travel.

With it, the plan can be drafted in advance: how much bone there is, whether grafting is needed, how many implants, and what order the work goes in. Then your first appointment is the examination and the start of the treatment, instead of the start of the planning.

Without it, the first day or two of a short visit goes on finding out what is needed.

One thing stated plainly: an X-ray taken at the clinic is not included in the free consultation. The consultation and the first check-up are free; imaging is not.

When bone grafting is in the plan

If there is too little bone to anchor the implant safely, it has to be built up first, and that adds its own healing period before the implant can go in.

This is exactly why the X-ray matters. Finding out on arrival that grafting is needed can turn a planned two-trip treatment into three, whereas knowing in advance lets the stages be set against the visits you were going to make anyway.

Scheduling the appointments

Over July, August and September more than half the patients at the clinic come from abroad, so appointments in those months fill up. Write early, with your actual dates, and appointments can be grouped inside the days you have.

Treatment at the clinic is discussed in Albanian, German or English. Dr. Shehu worked in two German dental practices between 2015 and 2018, so if you would rather have the whole thing explained in German, that is available.

After the procedure, at home

For the first few days: cool the area, nothing hot, no smoking, and brush carefully around the site. You are given the instructions in writing, so you are not working from memory once you are back.

Tenderness for a day or two is expected. Pain that gets stronger after the third day, swelling that keeps growing, or a fever is not expected, and that is when to call rather than wait it out. You have the clinic’s number, and WhatsApp works from anywhere.

Questions and answers

Can the whole implant treatment be done in one trip?

Not the whole of it, and any plan that promises otherwise is worth a second look. The implant needs three to four months in the bone before the final crown goes on. What can be done in one trip is the surgical part, with a temporary restoration, and that is the usual shape of it.

How many days do I need for the surgical visit?

For a single implant, the procedure itself takes about fifteen minutes. What you need days for is the first check-up afterwards, so the visit is scheduled with a few days left before you travel back. Tell us your dates and the appointment is placed accordingly.

Can anything be prepared before I arrive?

Yes, and it saves the most time of anything on this page. Send a recent X-ray and the plan can be drafted before you land, so the first appointment is the examination and the start of the work rather than the start of the thinking. Note that an X-ray taken here is not part of the free consultation.

What if something feels wrong after I have flown home?

Call. Tenderness for a day or two after the procedure is normal; pain that increases after the third day, swelling that grows, or a fever is not. You get the clinic's number and you can write on WhatsApp in Albanian, German or English.
